The United States, a mere 4.2% of the world, has 20% of the world’s prisoners. Are we truly more dangerous than than developing countries in Africa, than South America, than the Middle East? It is not material to, and has little to do with, security.
Abraham Lincoln, in his second inaugural address on slavery, cited something very important that Jesus said, to relate it to the consequences of collective sin on America. He cited Jesus Luke chapter 17, verses 1 to 4, which clearly states “woe is him through whom they, stumbling blocks, come”.
Today, unjust incarceration scheme is one of our principal vices and stumbling blocks, along with abortion. Who knows the consequences it has on America – woe is she!
In the Gospel, Luke explicitly talks FREEING prisoners, not just visiting them.
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,” he declared” Luke chapter 4, verses 18 to 19.
The choice is ours.
